TREATMENT: School-Based Treatment, Behavioural Interventions and Supports
Children and youth with complex, diagnosable problem behaviour or mental health issues represent approximately 5% of our population. In the Algoma Model, Specialized Treatment includes school-based treatment, behavioral interventions and support. The intent is to ensure that children and youth presenting with significant behavioural difficulties and mental health issues receive the support and treatment necessary to be successful in school.
Assessment and treatment are necessary for children and youth displaying significant symptoms of mental illness or with diagnosable disorders. The need for treatment may be of short-term duration, or may involve long-term professional involvement, or may fluctuate as the child or youth experiences various developmental stages and life events.

Youth and their parents should be encouraged to talk with their service provider about the availability of evidence-based treatment options, as well as discuss the benefits and risks of treatment.
The understanding and support of caring adults within the school environment, along with that of family and friends, are also very significant resources for a child or youth managing a mental health challenge.
